Two components of cognitive control and their relation to personality

Abstract

The conflict monitoring process associated with the stimulus locked N2 component and error processing associated with the response locked error negativity (ne) component have been reported to correlate with several individual differences. Also there has been an ongiong debate about considerable similarities in terms of topography and their respective neural generators. Therefore the aim of the present study is twofold. First, using event-related potentials, I investige possible similarities of both components in terms of topograghic distribution and amplitude magnitude. Additionally the relationship between the two components of cognitive control and three personality traits of the NEO-FFI personality inventory is explored, namely conscientiousness, extraversion and neuroticism. As predicted, no significant differenecs in topographic distribution were found. As for the differential problem, none of the personality traits measured correlated significantly with both components. Possible explanations for these results are discussed.
